Unfortunately, I forgot comics last week, and have not picked up comics today. So no review on what I've been reading, but if you're curious as to what I'm following, here's the list:

DC comics and Vertigo
Action Comics
Air
Adventure Comics
Azrael
Batman
Batman and Robin
Batman: Streets of Gotham
Blackest Night (all)
Detective Comics
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Gotham City Sirens
Jonah Hex
JSA Vs. Cobra
Justice Society of America (pending, may cancel)
Madame Xanadu
Power Girl
Secret Six
Super Girl
Superman
Superman: World of New Krypton
Superman: Secret Origin
The Unwritten
To keep it short and simple, anything with word Noir or Deadpool in the title.
Indy comics - Image, Avatar Press, Top Cow, Etc.
Let me get back to you on that. I have a lot, but none of them are series, they're mostly just story arcs told through 6 or 7 issues and I have to sort everything out before I can tell you off the top of my mind. But I can tell you what writers I mostly follow:
Warren Ellis (No Hero)
Garth Ennis (Streets of Glory)
David Peterson (Mouse Guard)
Steve Niles (Criminal Macabre; dropping his 30 Days of Night series)
Jimmy Palmiotti (Back to Brooklyn)
Also, There is a new Apple Tablet rumor circling around that suggests it will support digital comic books. I'm not too pleased with that, as I pretty much hate digital comics. There's a certain level of thrill and charm that comes with page turning and the feel of paper. Also, I'm a collector as well and the Baltimore Comic Convention that recently passed through here was an amazing experience for me.
A company called LongBox will offer an online store for both buying and viewing comics. It's set up to open in November.

Action Comics

Madame Xanadu (surfboards)
Power Girl ( better then i could have ever hoped)
Secret Six ( so bad the character just wear boxers and wife beater instead of costume, everyone man women and monster wears boxers and wife beaters all the time if wonder women stay for one more issue shell be wearing them too .......cancelled.... not just by me im guessing really soon)
Super Girl (power girls cooler)
Superman (has more book then deadpool ....by one ...for now)
Superman: World of New Krypton(^)
Superman: Secret Origin(^)
The Unwritten (unaware of this too)
To keep it short and simple, anything with word Noir or Deadpool in the title.
only book with deadpool but but that leaves two thirds of marvel catalog unread
on a serious not i truly feel bendis has become an amazing writing gaining the ability to develop character on a serious level without sacrificing a stories speed and impact and is making some of the best most complex yet not convoluted stories being told right now and i seriously suggest reading his avengers stuff just what ever you do dont pick up might avenger i know it seems like a good idea hercules and all but its not and bendis doesn't write it anymore
also pick up hercules its been great so far might go bad now though it moved into a different direction.....also why did you stop read x-factor it a pulp noir comic it just doesn't have it in its name
but as far as digital comic. the comic book is on its last legs it is an outdated form of media, as is all printed material especially monthlies. for the characters to survive and the stories go on they must find an other means of exposure and this is the only one that will really keep comic the same as they are now in essence. the other options of cartoons, movies, games all hold too much producer interested at least in the current model of production. That would as its has without fail change them to something more consumable. Also i dont know about you but i think the books take up more realestate then they are worth and the problem grows by the week literally. basically my point is that i feel the nostalgia of comic book could ruin them if they gave into it and this is the only real middle ground. something like marvels monthly thing once they have a massive data base it will be great. the same thing you get on Wednesday and a massive back catalog of everything there for you to read as you desire with and iphone app (fuck special machine that shits stupid we dont need more half ass computers i dont see anymore with a pom polite anymore cause its retarded) and your laptop anytime you want and nothing needing to be stored. cause lets be honest i doubt you have any desire to sell your comics one day.
Say what you will at my comics... You're just a hater.
ReplyDeleteBendis is a capable writer, and I fully believe that he can churn out a very complex and compelling story line, it's just not my cup of tea.
I can understand the sheer mass of comic books that can amount in a month and the energy costs and production costs for each book (especially if not all of them sell) and how it can all lead to a collapse of all comics.
But what I still see in comics, is the whole touchy feely part. I know that's not quite enough of an argument, but I for one, love to read on paper and hold something tangible. Digital comics also can't encapsulate certain artist's abilities (I still cite the 6 back to back splash pages of No Hero, JH Williams III's work, Ashley Wood, and David Peterson). I would probably buy a digital comic here and there (I would actually probably read more Marvel that way too), but I would buy the actual book if it was an artist or writer that I really liked.
The Apple tablet is not just a reader though, it's a full blown computer as well. Some people have likened it to a more powerful, bigger iPhone.
0 i could talk shit about a lot of comics im reading not on your list too if it would make you feel better :)
ReplyDelete1 have you given any of the new bendis a try its better then the old trust me
2 did you read the last no hero (see most post about about monster) they ripped me off like a mother fucker but it was a good way to end a book sort of lame ending story wise
also rgb can produce more vibrant colors and allows for limitless possibilities as far as formating goes where as a comic can only have what fits on a page think of it you could have an 8 foot long battle between the entire dc universe (thats what they wanted in infinite crisis)
3 iv wanted an apple tablet computer for a long time i just dont see a point for single functioning media devices anymore (so its still cool but kindle is only cool on an iphone not as its own thing)
Wait, you never really told me what you thought about No Hero.
ReplyDeleteRGB can produce more vibrant colors, but glare, ambient lighting, monitor settings like color correction and such, will fluctuate amongst devices. Apple for that matter have actually had different factory settings for a good portion of their iPhones.

Granted, shipping comic books can lead to mini-disasters within themselves.
I will acquiesce and admit that I would like to have a device, be it a laptop, reader, etc. that would subscribe to comic books for me that I could take on the road for vacations and what not. But the collector inside of me screams to want to own tangible objects.
I suppose I should ignore the voices that scream in my head and just listen to the calm soothing ones that sound like James Earl Jones. Whatever happened to that guy?
